Understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences: Part 1
4 hours attendance or 10 hours Accredited CPD
Provided by: Dr Wendy Thorley, National Teaching Fellow and previously a director of CEL&T
This course introduces discussion about Adverse Childhood Experiences ACEs - what they are and the impact these have on individual development from pre-natal to post-natal and throughout childhood and adulthood. The course is separated into 11 sections to provide understanding of not only what the ACEs risk may be but what this means for children and how this impacts upon children directly and indirectly. Imprisonment, Bereavement, being looked after as part of Children's Services or having been Previously Looked After are embedded into the course, along with discussion around how these ACEs can influence neurological development; as well as how ACEs can be experienced outside of the family unit through environmental ACEs and institutional ACEs. Discussion includes how such impact can be understood from the child's position rather than the adult position. In this way the course is relevant to anyone who works with or supports children and/or young people and/or their families from a personal interest or professional interest basis.
This course provides a solid foundation as underpinning knowledge for all of the courses and training we provide, enabling those new to this area of study to develop their knowledge further.
